In literature and art, a utopia is an ideal, nearly perfect community or society. Utopian values often emphasize peace and equality in economics, government and justice. Conversely, a dystopia is a world or society that is undesirable, even frightening. Dystopias are characterized by dehumanization, totalitarian government, environmental disaster, and/or other characteristics associated with a decline in society. Featuring the work of 16 artists and poets from across the U.S., "Utopia/Dystopia" addresses these embattled themes through poetry, works on paper, and printmaking.
