From their modest origins to contemporary high-end designs, sneakers have become a global obsession worn by billions of people around the world. The High Museum of Art presents the first exhibition in the United States to examine the sneaker's complex social history and cultural significance, from its origins in the mid-nineteenth century to its role in the present day as a status symbol of urban culture. The exhibition, which includes approximately 150 pairs of sneakers and originated at the Bata Shoe Museum, follows the evolution of sneaker design.
