Description

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 3 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

On a trip to the Grand Canyon in her mid-twenties, Susan Cofer and her husband, Carl, hiked through dense rock formations. As the canyon walls grew closer and closer together, only a sliver of light was able to pass between them: a revelation to the budding artist. She recalled that the dramatic tension between the stone forms was so immense and compelling, with only that slender line of light dividing them, it informed her work ever since. She has committed herself to a singular technique of using vertical lines to create her compositions.

In her first solo exhibition at Poem 88, Atlanta native Cofer presents new work — drawings perhaps even more spare and reductive than any she has ever made. Single vertical lines of color pencil, one after the other, create powerful, delicate compositions both meditative and energetic.
