Description

This museum has grown to become one of the Southeast's premier art museums, with major collections of Classical, Ancient Egyptian, Near Eastern, Ancient American, African and Asian art, as well as a collection of works on paper from the Renaissance to the present. Public tours of the museum are offered every Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Art of the Americas Galleries have been recently renovated to include native North American art, extending the range of this collection from South and Central America to North America. The pieces in the exhibit span 4,000 years — from 2000 B.C. to the 20th century.

The Ancient Egyptian, Nubian and Near Eastern Art Collection consists of ancient antiquities that cover the full spectrum of Nile Valley civilization — from the earliest prehistoric times to the period of Roman domination.

The Asian Art Collection offers some of the finest bronze sculptures ever created by artisans working under the Chola Dynasty of South India between the 9th and 13th centuries.

The Greek and Roman Art Collection spans four millennia. Works in many media are represented, including gold, silver, electrum, bronze, lead, ivory and bone, marbles of many kinds, semi-precious stones, glass and clay.

The African Art Collection offers valuable insight into African artistic expressions, and the artwork reflects the size and diversity of the African continent. The redesigned gallery opens August 6.

The Works of Art on Paper Collection presents medieval illuminated manuscripts, woodcuts by Albrecht Durer, etchings by Piranesi, drawings by Delacroix and lithographs by Robert Rauschenberg. The 3,000 works of European and American art span six centuries and consist mainly of drawings, prints and photographs but also include some sculpture, paintings and works in other media.
