Art Werger’s preferred approach to image making has always been pulling light out of darkness. Starting with scratchboard and erased charcoal drawings, he found his artistic style in going from dark to light. In 1985, he started experimenting in the mezzotint medium and fell in love with the results, referring to it as “legitimate black velvet painting.” Taking inspiration from the woodcut novels of Lynd Ward and Frans Masereel, as well as contemporary graphic novels, he began a series of square sequential compositions.
