Description

“The MIKADO or “The Town of Titipu” was produced at London, England’s Savoy Theatre in March 1885, eventually proving to be one of the most popular of all Gilbert & Sullivan works. The story is indeed an exotic concoction of Oriental aromas, but has little—to nothing—to do with Asia, or specifically Japan. Indeed Japan was bravely peering out onto the world; and exoticism was once again looming on the horizon. Despite the curiosity of Asian custom, tradition, fashion, reserve, the cost of honor, the value of life, and full-blown understated beauty, The MIKADO effectively satirizes the British… and those of any culture that might take themselves too seriously.”
