"Degrees of Visibility" by Ashley Hunt is a body of photographs that study the landscapes in which over 250 prisons, jails and detention centers sit throughout each of the 50 U.S. states and territories. Each image was photographed from a publicly available point of view. Statistics have been obtained from the facility pictured, or if refused by the facility, through another publicly available source, all obtained between 2013 and 2016. Some images are accompanied by additional materials, offering further descriptions of the space pictured. This project is a study in the aesthetics of mass incarceration, documenting how history’s largest system of civil imprisonment is enabled through its camouflage within everyday landscapes — disappearing the bodies, practices and systemic problems that the system conceals among various types of space and land use.
