Of his recent work, Anthony Greco writes, “This ‘series’ of work began as small studies for larger paintings. I soon realized they had a life of their own and they have since grown and evolved. I began calling them ‘Goyesquas,’ relating them, flimsily, to the late, dark, expressionistic paintings of Francisco Goya. Whereas those ‘black paintings’ were gloomy, bleak and pessimistic, I see these paper pieces as poetic, dark dirges and elegies… The [pieces in this show] are subtitled either as ‘Collateral Damage’ or ‘Near Certainty.’ They stem from reactions to the kinds of absurd statements we hear on a daily basis in the media.”
