Skylark, the critically-acclaimed professional a cappella ensemble of vocalists from across the US under the direction of Matthew Guard, is coming to Spivey Hall as part of their multi-state holiday tour. Audiences can join Skylark for a journey through select excerpts of the Christmas story from the King James Bible, enhanced and celebrated through timeless carols.

As a connecting thread throughout the performances in four states, Skylark will share all seven of Hugo Distler's variations of the classic Christmas hymn "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" (“Lo, how a Rose ‘ere blooming”). Skylark will also offer two US premieres of music forgotten by history: a lullaby written in 1949 by French composer Georges Dupuy de Méry (edited by Skylark Artistic Director Matthew Guard) and a polyphonic piece in six parts by celebrated 17th-century Italian composer Gregorio Allegri (transcribed and edited by Skylark tenor and musicologist John K. Cox). The program will end with a festive offering of classic Christmas Carols by American composer Alfred Burt.
