When Johnson Publishing created Ebony magazine in 1945 and Jet magazine in 1952, the black American narrative was changed forever.

Images of black people in America appeared in a format as representative and glossy as Life magazine and other mainstream publications.

Theaster Gates: The Black Image Corporation” is a new exhibition on view at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art.

Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee is director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, and she joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes recently.

She explained how prominent artist Gates helped bring the exhibition to Spelman.

The exhibit is on view through May 16.
