This Weekend in Atlanta: Beyoncé; Ice Cream; Festivals; & More

This weekend in Atlanta adults can consume cocktails at a special event at the Georgia Aquarium, festival fare at the Grant Park Summer Shade Festival or ice cream at a festival in Roswell. After a couple days of indulgence you can stop by Atlanta Ballet for an event to learn more about healthy living that includes a performance by its second company.

At the Decatur Library a Friday reception honors inventive artists books.

Theatrical Outfit continues its ro a show described as a love letter to Shakespeare with a special talk back session or industry ticket opportunities this weekend.

Musically speaking, kick the weekend off with a free local concert in Marietta’s square before seeing superstars Beyoncé and Jay-Z at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday or Sunday.

Theater

The Book of Will

When: Through Sept. 9, Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Where: Theatrical Outfit

Cost: $18 to $51

What to Expect: Set in 1619 in England, Atlanta native Lauren Gunderson’s play follows a group of William Shakespeare’s devotees who scramble to publish his plays in an effort to preserve his legacy. After this Friday’s show there will be a “Page to Stage Talkback” during which representatives from the cast, creative team, and staff share how they moved the show from script to finished production. Also for working artists, management and support staff, $15 industry tickets are available for the Thursday 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 2:30 p.m. shows this week.

Sips Under the Sea

When: Aug. 24 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Where: Georgia Aquarium

Cost: $28.95 to $48.95

What to Expect: Enjoy the aquarium after hours with cocktails, tapas and entertainment. Friday’s theme is “Tailgate Party.”

Healthy Living Day

When: Aug. 26 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Where: Atlanta Ballet’s Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre

Cost: Free!

What to Expect: At this annual event kids and adults can participate in a variety of free activities such as arts & crafts, dance classes, and healthy living seminars. There will also be door prizes and a healthy living book fair. There will be an Atlanta Ballet 2 performance at 5 p.m. See the full schedule >

Beyoncé And Jay-Z

When: Aug. 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Mercedes-Benz Stadium

What to Expect: See Beyoncé, one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary music, and Jay-Z, rapper and major label executive, in concert in downtown Atlanta.

What to Expect: At this event visitors can taste more than 100 flavors of homemade ice cream, dive into ice cream eating and stacking contests, enjoy live music and let the kids work off their energy in the Kid’s Korner.

Festivals 

Grant Park Summer Shade Festival

When: Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Where: Grant Park

Cost: Free!

Glover Park Concert Series

When: Aug. 24 at 8 p.m.

Where: Glover Park

Cost: Free!

What to Expect: Head to the Marietta Square for an outdoor show by Crystal Clear Band. The concerts are free but if you are looking for a “front-row seat,” a limited number of tables can be reserved for a fee.

Book As Art: Pulp

When: Reception: Friday, August 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.; Exhibit: Through Sept. 28, Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.

Where: Periodicals Gallery of the Decatur Library

Cost: Free!

What to Expect: Artist books take many forms – from handmade and lusciously tactile to linear and informative, abstract and questioning to sculptural and monumental. This juried show celebrates the book with a wildly varied collection of inventive and spectacular work that challenges expectations.
