This Weekend In Atlanta: Mini Con; Comedy Festival; Culture Club & More

There is plenty to do for kids and adults alike this weekend in Atlanta.

Adults will enjoy music by the Joe Gransden Big Band at the High’s Friday Jazz event.

On Saturday those with sensory sensitivities can explore Fernbank Museum of Natural History an hour before it opens to the general public during a special event. Later on, children can celebrate comics during Mini Con up at Cobb’s new Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center.

Also on Saturday, Miami Circle will be abuzz with activity for its monthly art stroll.

On Sunday head over to Chastain Park Amphitheatre for a concert by Boy George and Culture Club with The B-52s.

All weekend Atlantans can also see “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse or take part in the citywide ATL Comedy Arts Fest.

Mini Con

When: July 21 from 1 to 6 p.m.

Where: Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center

Cost: Free!

What to Expect: Bring the whole family to celebrate comics and pop culture at this event. There will be a cosplay contest, tabletop game demonstrations, a Dungeons and Dragons Adventure League, malifaux demos, 3-D printing demos, face painting and games. There will also be panels, workshops, vendors and food trucks.


ATL Comedy Arts Fest

When: July 20 through 24

Where: Various Locations

Cost: Price varies by event

What to Expect: The ATL Comedy Arts Fest is a citywide, multi-venue stand up comedy festival and symposium. Featuring the top comedians in the region and up and coming comics, the festival will culminate with eight half-hour TV episodes and two one-hour long specials being filmed at two of the venues. Fernbank Summer Sensory Series

When: July 21 from 9 to 10 a.m.

Where: Fernbank Museum of Natural History

Cost: Free to $20

What to Expect: Gain early access to Fernbank’s exhibits in this event designed for guests with sensory sensitivities, mobility issues and/or those with physical limitations who might benefit from a less-crowded environment.


Culture Club & The B-52s

When: July 22 at 7 p.m.

Where: Chastain Park Amphitheatre

Cost: $45 to $75

What to Expect: Kick back and spend a fun, carefree night outside listening to Boy George and Culture Club, The B-52s, and the Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey.


A Midsummer Night’s Dream

When: Through July 29: Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse

Cost: $15 to $42

What to Expect: Two pairs of lovers (one requited, one… not so much) and a rag-tag group of thespians find themselves lost in the woods right as the fairy kingdom is turned on its head by its quarreling leaders. Nature and love will never be the same! Lord what fools these mortals be!

Friday Jazz

When: July 20 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Where: High Museum of Art

Cost: Free with Museum Admission: $14.50

What to Expect: At this monthly event visitors can grab a cocktail, hear some great jazz music, and enjoy the ambiance of one of Atlanta’s most beloved museums. July features one of the busiest groups on the jazz scene — the Joe Gransden Big Band. During the event you can also hone your sketching skills at Drawing in the Galleries from 6 to 9 p.m.


Miami Circle Art Stroll

When: July 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Miami Circle Art Galleries

Cost: Free!

What to Expect: Take a leisurely stroll through Miami Circle’s art galleries, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy the company of art enthusiasts at this monthly event. Participating galleries include Anne Irwin Fine Art, Alan Avery Art Company, Pryor Fine Art, Lagerquist Gallery, Reinike Gallery, Thomas Deans Fine Art and more!
